Mokele Mbembe

We received this e-mail from Bruce, in Canada.

A friend of mine told me that he saw on the news, actual video coverage of a dinosaur in the Congo. They said it was "undeniable proof", or something like that. This was about a month ago (early August / late July). Have you heard anything about this? I've been searching the net & couldn't turn anything up. I would love to see just how valid this report is, and how credible the people who filmed it are. If you hear or find anything on this matter, I'd really appreciate it.

Bruce is referring to Mokele Mbembe, a creature that is rumored to live in the Congo. There are alleged audio recordings of it bellowing. Some people claim that when shown drawings of a dinosaur, natives say that the drawing is Mokele Mbembe. As far as we know, nobody has ever taken any still photographs or video of it. We don’t know if the creature really exists or not. If the creature does exist, it may or may not be a dinosaur.

It is of interest to some people because they think it would be “undeniable proof” that dinosaurs did not live millions of years ago. Although we believe that it would be strong evidence that the conventional geologic time scale is wrong, we don’t believe it would change the minds of evolutionists. Even if Mokele Mbembe is captured alive, brought back to a major university or zoo, and determined to be a real dinosaur, evolutionists will merely say that a small population of dinosaurs managed to remain alive, without being detected, for 65 million years. We know this for a fact, because that’s what they said when the coelacanth ("see-la-kanth") was discovered.

Before 1938, the coelacanth was “known” to have been extinct for 65 million years. Now, 10 to 15 are caught every year. There is even a web site devoted to keeping the coelacanth from really becoming extinct.

Once thought to have gone extinct with the dinosaurs, the Coelacanth was "discovered" alive and well in 1938. … This is the web site of the Coelacanth Rescue Mission, a project under the direction of Jerome F. Hamlin to reduce Coelacanth fatalities.

This web site has an article entitled, "Discovery" of the Coelacanth, in which they say,

A living dinosaur, it was said, would be no more amazing than this incredible discovery.

Despite the importance of the discovery, that web site says,

The National Geographic Society, Nature, and the Smithsonian Institute jumped on the bandwagon decreeing a news embargo which kept the coelacanth research community in the dark for another year.

They also describe the turf wars that suppressed information. Would Mokele Mbembe information be suppressed, too?

If Mokele Mbembe does exist, and is a dinosaur, and is captured alive, evolutionists will treat it just like the coelacanth. Evolutionists will argue about who has the right to study it. Much of what they learn will be kept secret. We will find out if dinosaurs were warm- or cold-blooded, but that’s about all. Evolutionists will marvel at how dinosaurs were able to exist for so many million years without leaving a fossil trace.

Evolutionists may even eventually admit that dragons, leviathan, behemoth, and the thunderbird really were dinosaurs. But they will say it just proves that other dinosaurs lived longer than previously believed, and that the fossil record is very incomplete. This will bolster their argument that the reason we can’t find any “missing links” is that the fossil record is so incomplete. After all, if we could not find any huge dinosaurs in the last 65 million years of strata, what are the chances of finding missing links?

What the evolutionists would like you to forget is that the time scale associated with the geologic column is based on the idea that certain fossils lived only at certain times. In particular, coelacanths and dinosaurs lived for a certain period of time millions of years ago. This tells when rocks containing these fossils were formed. But, if coelacanths and dinosaurs live in the present, then the rocks containing their fossils could be just hundreds or thousands of years old. This throws their whole time scale into question.

We don’t know if Mokele Mbembe is a dinosaur living in the Congo. But we do know that the coelacanth “dinofish” is alive and possibly on the verge of extinction today. We believe that some of the “mythical” creatures whose descriptions closely match “prehistoric” animals were actually seen by humans in the last few thousand years. If this isn’t evidence enough that the geologic time scale is based on incorrect assumptions, then Mokele Mbembe won’t be enough evidence, either.
